Matt Lauer's former Today show colleagues Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb reacted on-air Wednesday to the rape allegations made against him.

In excerpts published in Variety on Tuesday, Ronan Farrow's new book Catch and Kill details an account from former NBC employee Brooke Nevils, who said Matt Lauer raped her in his hotel room while they were covering the Sochi Olympics in 2014.

Farrow's book is the first time Nevils, who was previously unnamed in allegations against Lauer, is speaking out publicly.

Guthrie called the allegations shocking and appalling.

I honestly don't even know what to say about it, Guthrie said on-air. I want to say that I know it wasn't easy for our colleague Brooke to come forward then, it's not easy now, and we support her and any women who have come forward with claims. And it's just very painful for all of us at NBC and at the 'Today.' It's very, very difficult.

Kotb added that the moment felt similar to two years ago, when Lauer was fired after NBC said an employee had accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.

Guthrie had announced Lauer's firing in 2017, and Kotb has since permanently replaced him on the broadcast.

I think it's like you feel like you've known someone for 12 years. I don't know if you guys have ever felt like that — you know someone, you know them, you feel like you know them inside and out, and all the sudden a door opens up and it's a part of them you didn't know, Kotb said.

She continued: And we don't know all the facts in all of this, but there are not allegations of an affair, there are allegations of a crime. I think that's shocking to all of us here who sat with Matt for many, many years. So we're going to continue to process this part of this horrific story. And as you said, our thoughts are with Brooke. It's not easy what she did to come forward. It's not easy at all.

Guthrie added: I think I speak for all of us — we're disturbed to our core. And we have a commitment to keep you informed and we will continue to do that.

NBC issued a statement about the allegations, saying: Matt Lauer's conduct was appalling, horrific and reprehensible, as we said at the time. That's why he was fired within 24 hours of us first learning of the complaint. Our hearts break again for our colleague.

Representatives of Lauer sent Insider a lengthy statement responding to the allegations Wednesday morning, claiming the encounter was consensual.

Farrow's book, Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators, comes out October 15.
